In today’s post, we’ll review a few of the common terms we use in our auto modification shop and the ones that we get the most questions about.

The A-Pillar is the main support frame for your windshield. It’s the sloping portion of the frame that connects the roof of the car to the front hood support.
At Jet Black Tint and Glass, the A-pillar of your car is important during windshield replacement and special attention is played to its condition. If there is rust or dents on the A-pillar, your windshield will not rest correctly in place and will compromise the structural integrity of your car. During paint protection film installation, this is one of the critical spots that should have special attention paid to because, as one of the most forward-facing parts of the car, it is more vulnerable to peeling if not correctly wrapped.
The B-pillar of a vehicle is also called the post, and is one of the most important components of the vehicle’s roof support. The B-pillar is the portion of the frame that provides roof support between a car’s front door window and rear side window, if there is one. It contains the front door’s lock, the hinges for the rear door, and provides support for the roof of the car.
B-pillars or posts differ depending on what kind of vehicle and roof you have as well as how many doors your vehicle has. The B-pillar is one of the most common places that sustain car wrap or PPF damage due to it being a high-touch area of the vehicle. At Jet Black Tint and Glass of Central California, our technicians take special care to ensure your B-pillar is completely and accurately wrapped.
As you may have concluded already, your car’s pillars are named in alphabetical order from the front of the car to the rear of the car. C-pillars are the roof support between a car’s rearmost side window and its back windshield. On a vehicle with four side pillars, including vans and SUVs with third-row seating, the rearmost roof support is called a D-pillar.
Ceramic car compounds including those used in ceramic coating and ceramic window tint are silicone dioxide solutions that provide durability to whatever product it’s added to. For instance, in ceramic coating, it provides a hard protective shell on top of the vehicle’s paint or PPF. In window tint, nano-ceramic particles more effectively block solar rays and protect the glass beneath. At Jet Black Tint and Glass, ceramic is used in our ceramic coating and window tint to offer long-lasting protection.
“Chassis” is a general term that refers to the load-bearing structure of a vehicle that contains all of the mechanical parts of a car.
At Jet Black Tint and Glass, you won’t hear this term often because we don’t deal much with your vehicle’s chassis. PPF is typically only applied to exposed, visible parts of the vehicle and does not impact your vehicle’s structure or mechanical ability to perform.
Clear Bra is a term that refers to an area being protected by PPF, not so much the product itself. Car bras, historically, were loose pieces of shaped leather or plastic affixed to the front end of vehicles to protect the most vulnerable parts of the cars from insects and damage caused by weather and road debris coming into contact with the front-most parts of the car. Now, it is more common to use paint protection film in these areas to offer a more permanent and less obvious solution.
At Jet Black Tint, our Clear Bra, or partial front, PPF packages include the coverage of front bumper, fender, and one-third of the hood. Our Clear Bra installation comes standard with basic full car window tint for an upgrade that protects and looks great.
A closed car with two side doors and less than 33 cubic feet of rear interior volume. A two-door car is not necessarily a coupe if the interior space meets the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) definition for a sedan. At Jet Black Tint and Glass, there is no price difference in PPF or tint packages between coupes or sedans.
Rocker panels are the protective guards on the lowest part of the sides of your vehicle. These may be a part of your car’s metal or carbon-fiber body or it can be a metal or plastic part added on top of the car’s body. Rocket panels are useful in preventing damage from road chemicals and moisture oxidation that causes rust and corrosion.
At Jet Black Tint and Glass, the rocker panels are included with most of our PPF packages and can be included in chrome delete services.
The term “sedan” refers to a fixed-roof car with at least four doors or any fixed-roof two-door car with more than 33 cubic feet of rear interior volume.
