Etching is similar to watermarks, but is more permanent and affects your car’s paint, chemically. Acidic rain that is common to the California coast breaks down the top layer of your paint causing spotting or discoloration. Etching is identified by irregularly shaped spots, discoloration or pitting that appears on your car’s paint surface.
Acidic or corrosive natural elements like tree sap, bird droppings, and insect carcasses, or chemical agents such as acid raid, road tar, pollution, and road salt stick to the surface of your car for an extended period of time, a chemical change happens and will cause staining or chemical etching. This reaction is similar to oxidation which causes rust formation when moisture remains on metal for long periods of time.
For standard water spots, you can remove them with a thorough car wash using soap and hot water with light scrubbing by soft microfiber towels or sponges. Avoid abrasive brushes, harsh chemicals, or scouring the surface further. And, be sure to always wash your car in mild temperatures and dry your paint with soft, microfiber towels. Whatever you do, don’t let the heat and California sunshine dry your car for you — this will only worsen the problem! Some home remedies include washing your car using a mixture of one tablespoon of baking soda dissolved in a quart of water before rinsing it well.
For areas that have suffered etching as opposed to water spots, you can wet sand the problem area with 1500-2000 grit sandpaper and then compound and polish the area to restore the shine. In severe chemical etching cases, you must remove the finish right up to the bare metal of your car’s surface.

Avoid parking under telephone lines or near balconies where birds collect. Avoid parking under trees where sap and debris may fall and where rainwater and animals gather.
Always remove harmful contaminants that can be dissolved by water with regular hand washing. You should also wax or polish your car regularly to whisk water away from your paint and
prevent moisture from drying on your car’s surface. Apply ceramic coating when possible and keep up with regular detailing, noting any damage and addressing minor concerns before they become major problems.

Ceramic coating is a thick, protective wax that can be applied directly to your car’s paint or as an add-on with PPF or vinyl wrap. Ceramic coating is fairly quick and easy to apply and is the least expensive option for preventing etching. Ceramic coating does have to be reapplied periodically to maintain its effectiveness.
